Do I need to have a degree in Social Pedagogy, Social Work, or Social Education?

No, we also accept applications from people without a degree who have at least 5 years of social work/social education/similar experience or people who are currently enrolled in school for Social Pedagogy, Social Work, or Social Education.

When can I start?

Applicants can enter the program in either May or October, applications must be received at least 8 weeks before the program start date to allow time for visa processing.

How much will it cost me?

Global Exchange Opportunities has no application fee. However there is a fee when scheduling your visa interview. Be prepared to spend around $250.

Do I have to have a car?

Yes, although public transportation is available in most U.S. cities, you will need a car to get to your training site, run errands, and get around while you are here.

Where will I live?

GEO will provide housing. You may live with one or more other individuals in the program. You will have your own room and linen. Utilities (heat, electricity, and water) will also be provided. You will have to pay for your own internet connection and cable TV.

Who will I live with?

You will live with other individuals in the program. They may be from your country, or another country. They may be older or younger than you. If you have special living requirements, please let us know so we can try to accommodate them.

Will I be paid?

GEO will pay a stipend of $1000.00/month and provide you with health insurance.

Will my flight be paid for?

NO, you are responsible for your flights to and from the United States.

How many days off will I have a week?

GEO will make every effort to give each individual two days off in a row. You may have to train on weekends. Your individual schedule will be arranged with your supervisor.

Will I get any vacation time?

Yes! Your vacation time will be determined by the agency at which you are placed.

Can I leave the country while under my J-1 Visa?

Yes, however you may not travel outside the U.S. for more than 30 consecutive days and you must notify your sponsoring agency well in advance of your departure.

What kind of support will I receive during my year?

You will be assigned a support staff from GEO that will be available to help you with any difficult or significant issues.

What kind of training will I receive when I arrive?

GEO will provide an orientation to introduce you to the United States and the program when you arrive. You will have five days of adjustment to help you acclimate to your new environment, after which you will take part in the orientation at the agency where you are placed. When you arrive at your assignment, your supervisor will introduce you to that specific site and its population. If any special training is needed, you will receive that on-site.

What should I bring with me?

We recommend that you bring seasonal clothes, a laptop if you have one, a good attitude and an open mind. Almost anything else you might need can be purchased once you arrive.

What is a Social Security Number (SSN) and do I need one?

A Social Security Number is a number issued by the Social Security Administration to track both citizens and non-citizens. During your GEO orientation we will take you to the Social Security Administration office and help you apply for an SSN. It can take several weeks for your Social Security Card to arrive.

How many hours per week will I be training?

You will train for 38-40 hours per week.

What do I wear to my training placement?

In general, acceptable attire includes neat and clean jeans, khakis, or similar pants and a neat and clean shirt. Your supervisor will go over the dress code for your specific program.

Can I bring a pet?

No, due to allergies and other health concerns, pets cannot accompany participants.

Can I bring my spouse?

Yes. However, they must obtain their own visa and health insurance. Please let us know if you have a spouse you would like to bring with you.

Do I need to carry papers with me?

Yes. While in the U.S. you should have your I-94, to confirm you have entered the U.S. legally, and your DS-2019, to confirm that you are legally entitled to train at a workplace.
